Preparation for sessions
- Horses should be groomed. The removal of dirt and debris is necessary for the therapist to properly evaluate the muscles.
- If the horse is going to be bathed within 24-hours of the visit; please do not use hair conditioning products as it affects the use of kinesiology tape.
- Bodywork is not a substitute for situations that require veterinary care. Check with your veterinarian to ensure bodywork is appropriate.
First Session
- 60-75 minutes
- The therapists will gather information about the horse. This will include any current or past health issues, their current work schedule and the goals the owner wishes to achieve.
- We will evaluate the horse’s major muscle groups to determine areas of spasm or tension based on the texture of the muscle and the horse’s response to our touch. Finally, we will evaluate the horse’s gait and fluidity of motion while being hand walked.
- Owners/rider are required to be present at the first session. We will discuss the results of the evaluation and provide our recommendation for treatment.
- The first visit will include a full massage.
- Regular massage sessions- 45-60 minutes
- Regular taping sessions-30-45 minutes
Post Session
It is fine to ride the horse after massage or taping. If the therapist has identified areas that will benefit from massaging while grooming or stretching exercises, they will demonstrate the exercises to be done between visits.
Saddle Fit
Improper fitting saddles are a major cause of muscle imbalance, muscle spasms and tension. It is important to have saddles evaluated to ensure they fit properly. Increasing or decreasing the horse’s work/training will affect the muscles and, therefore, the saddle fit.
- Annual saddle fit evaluation
- Evaluate fit when there is a significant weight change
- Evaluate fit when there is significant growth by the horse
- Evaluate fit if returning to work after a lay off
